If you are a MEDIUM company, chances are that you have a few engineers, but they are stretched thin with present responsibilities like product support and dealing with the customers. Western Space and Marine can help by developing and prototyping new products for you while your engineering staff continues with their present responsibilities.

If you are a LARGE company, chances are that you have a number of engineers and prototyping capabilities, but you may have excessive lead times and high overhead costs for completing smaller jobs. Western Space and Marine can help by providing a service in which red-tape and middle-management do not exist. Past experience has shown that Western Space and Marine can complete jobs for larger companies at a lower overall cost than doing them in-house. Turnover times are also improved over in-house efforts.

We have the ability to design a computer generated 3-D solid model of your part or system in order to more fully develop your product. Designing in three dimensions far surpasses the restrictions of the drawing board of the past. With three dimensional capabilities, we are now able to "photo render" a part, or see it as it would appear in real life. Complicated parts are simplified by being able to see internal structures. An example of this is hydraulic manifolds. What once took several drawings to describe can now be drawn in a single three dimensional part. This part then can be rendered in an opaque plastic so that all the internal features are visible to the designer. The computer can check for interference problems along with mass properties such as volume and moments of inertia.

Also, to better serve our customers, we have a licensed Professional Engineer as our President of Engineering. This is vital when your product needs certification or when legal matters arise.

At WSM we have the ability to prototype most of the products we design in our well equipped machine shop. We have CNC capability which helps expand our capabilities in order to better serve our customers. By doing the prototyping in house, the product can be built in a much more timely manner. We are not dependent on outside job shops which cater more to their production customers. Also, in-house prototyping allows us to eliminate time-and-money-wasting bureaucracy when changes are needed or questions arise. Machinists and engineers work closely together at WSM to ensure a quality product.
 
 

By utilizing this ability WSM was able to complete the design, fabrication, and testing of the remotely operated vehicle "Snoop" featured in Jim Cameron's "Titanic" in only 75 days. Many of today's companies would require that much time just to complete the necessary paperwork to approve the project.
